I was fascinated and amazed at the Mars landing recently after months of travel through space. The precision of the landing and the marvel of the engineering and science involved should make all Americans proud. There was one aspect however of the early stages of the mission that I can't stop mulling over.
With all the things the rover is capable of and all the symbolism tied to these types of programs, why is the first thing we did was have it shoot something? Is it just me or do you find that ironic if not telling about our species? What if an advanced civilization was watching our actions unbeknownst by us, what would their assessment of our actions be? Did we unwittingly set ourselves up for confrontation? Suppose there is sentient life we were unaware of that are now pissed off?
I do not know why this nags me.
